Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Exodus 18:8-11 • “Seeing” is Not Necessarily “Believing”

January 27th, 2012 by Servant

"Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had delivered them. Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, in delivering them from the hand of the Egyptians. So Jethro said, 'Blessed be the Lord who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people.'"
    —Exodus 18:8-11 (NASB)

Compare and contrast the difference between Pharaoh—the eyewitness of everything that took place—and Jethro, someone merely hearing about them. Although Pharaoh witnessed and lived through and was even the direct object of these events, he never listened and his hardened heart never allowed him to be changed or to accept God's message. Because Jethro's heart and ears are open and leaning towards God to begin with, he is transformed and confesses, "Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods".

Exodus 17:11-13 • Partners in the Battle

January 26th, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword."
    —Exodus 17:11-13 (NASB)

What a tremendous picture of what it takes for the church to overcome and win spiritual battles! In the example of Moses, Aaron, Hur, Joshua and the fighters we are provided with an illustration of what it takes to overcome our spiritual enemy. Some are needed to engage in the battle, some to lead that battle, and others to support them through prayer and intercession on their behalf.

Exodus 16:17-18 • No Excess, No Lack

January 25th, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered as much as he should eat."
    —Exodus 16:17-18 (NASB)

The picture here is everyone going out each day to gather the manna, bringing it back to a central place, and then doling it out to each person as they need it, an omer at a time. Everyone worked to varying degrees—some gathered more, some less—but everyone received what they needed. It's a teaching that the same grace is in all, that everyone alike has an equal interest in Christ. Although some have sinned more or less than others, although our needs vary widely from one person to the next, we are all equally redeemed by His blood, justified by His righteousness, forgiven to all take part in the inheritance of His eternal kingdom.

Exodus 15:16-18 • What is Man’s Purpose?

January 24th, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"Terror and dread fall upon them;
By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone;
Until Your people pass over, O Lord,
Until the people pass over whom You have purchased.
You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance,
The place, O Lord, which You have made for Your dwelling,
The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.
The Lord shall reign forever and ever."
    —Exodus 15:16-18 (NASB)

What is man's purpose on earth? In every film, lecture, book and article of a scientific nature that's crossed my path, the object of the discussion always comes back to explain where that thing "fits" in the overall scheme of nature or the universe. Everything is alledged to be so connected that we've established not just cycles of life but defined entire ecosystems wherein it is feared that the whole could be destroyed by the removal of even the most seemingly benign member. Science seems able to pinpoint the function of each and every plant, animal, insect and even mineral element as to not just its general function, but as to its place in support of the delicate balance of this planet. What is man's purpose? How does he fit in? Why does he seem to be the only creature in all of creation with the ability to actually change creation?

Exodus 14:1-3 • When All Sides Converge

January 23rd, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, "They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in."'"
    —Exodus 14:1-3 (NASB)

This is the place where God is going to part the Red Sea and make provision for Israel to pass through. The names of the places identified at this location provide more than the geographic location of this event; they tell us about the spiritual circumstances.

Exodus 13:9 • On the Hand and the Forehead

January 22nd, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"And it shall serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder on your forehead, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with a powerful hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt."
    —Exodus 13:9 (NASB)

It's amazing how some things get disproportionate attention to the detriment of the whole. In this case, I'm talking about the "mark of the beast".

Exodus 12:18-20 • First the Blood, then the Bread

January 21st, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 02: Exodus | No Comments »

"In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. You shall not eat anything leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread."
    —Exodus 12:18-20 (NASB)

It's important to note the sequence of Passover events. The Passover Lamb was to be selected on the 10th of the month and slain on the 14th. (Exodus 12:3-6) The Feast of Unleavened Bread was to begin on the 14th and continue until the 21st. First the lamb, then the unleavened bread.
