Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Revelation 22:7, 18-19 • Our Part

Saturday, September 6th, 2008
“‘And behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book…I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.’”
    —Revelation 22:7, 18-19 (NASB)

So what does “heeds the words” mean? You respect it? You believe it? You give it due caution? In the 75 times or so that this word appears in the New Testament it’s most often translated “keep“. It’s a word that is derived from the Greek word that means “to watch or keep” which carries with it the meaning that you don’t simply take custody of something, but take personal possession of it. In other words, it’s the same thing Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, to be someone who “hears these Words of Mine and acts on them.” [1]

Revelation 21:21-22 • Streets of Pure Gold

Friday, September 5th, 2008

<     —div class="scripture">“And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.”
    —Revelation 21:21-22 (NASB)

Even in the course of the book of Revelation, much less the whole of the Bible, there has been significant focus on the temple. Chapter 11 opened with John having to measure the earthly temple — something God does when He claims possession of something, and ends with the reappearance of the ark of the covenant in the parallel version of the temple in heaven. And yet this is something which is not found in eternity in the New Heaven and New Earth. This is because the greater spiritual meaning of biblical temples is literally fulfilled. They represent how to access and come into God’s presence.

Revelation 20:4-6 • The Only Real Option

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
“Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.”
    —Revelation 20:4-6 (NASB)

A sad truth is that once you believe or put into practice one error, other biblical errors are sure to follow. So I think it’s worth reading this chapter very carefully several times asking yourself, “Does anything about the Millennial Reign of Christ sound less than literal?” Does this come across to you somehow as symbolic or representing something spiritual with no physical parallel? These are not odd questions because one of the ways you can know that a person or organization has fallen into doctrinal error is the lengths they go to in denying there will ever be a literal, thousand year reign of Christ.

Revelation 18:9-10 • Judgment Has Come

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
“‘And the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and lived sensuously with her, will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, “Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.”‘”
    —Revelation 18:9-10 (NASB)

Chapter 17 is primarily devoted to the destruction of spiritual Babylon, chapter 18 to the destruction of economic Babylon. Throughout the whole of human history, even up to and including this present hour, spiritual deception and unfaithfulness have always gone hand in hand with the pursuit of personal wealth. It’s been as obvious as the Catholic Church taking competing bids for the right to fill the papacy to the modern use of television and books to preach the false prosperity gospels purporting to connect financial wealth with spiritual health. But in a world where we argue about different economic models and how they’re applied politically, there’s a greater accountability coming for how they’ve been employed spiritually.

Revelation 17:17 • To Execute His Purpose

Monday, September 1st, 2008
“‘For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled.’”
    —Revelation 17:17 (NASB)

The topic of Babylon teaches us a great deal about the way the Bible uses prophecy, which is not always about fulfilling a single, future date but often repeated events foreshadowing an ultimate fulfillment. There was the literal Babylon which has been extinct for many centuries but in the mean time there have been many repeated types of Babylon. The Early Church understood quite clearly that the mystery religions making up spiritual Babylon had migrated to Rome by their time. [1] But ultimately it has a final fulfillment in the Last Days as both an economic and spiritual surrogate for the Antichrist.

Revelation 16:8-11 • They Refused

Sunday, August 31st, 2008
“The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given to it to scorch men with fire. Men were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory. Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they did not repent of their deeds.”
    —Revelation 16:8-11 (NASB)

Here we have an example of something we’ve talked about repeatedly throughout the book of Revelation: you’re most likely to behave exactly the same way during times of trial as you normally behave in times of peace and prosperity. Why do they blaspheme and refuse to repent when the wrath of God is poured out upon them? Because that’s exactly what they did when His love was offered.

Revelation 15:1 • The Wrath of God

Saturday, August 30th, 2008
“Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven angels who had seven plagues, which are the last, because in them the wrath of God is finished.”
    —Revelation 15:1 (NASB)

We have to remember that the book of Revelation did not originally come with chapter and verse markings. It’s actually one, contiguous letter. And the context for which the final display of God’s wrath is about to come has first been established in the preceding verses in Revelation 14:14-20 of the harvest of believers versus that of non-believers. Because it certainly explains what we find in the verse immediately following this that already standing in heaven are “those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name“.
