Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

John 21:20-22 • You Follow Me

Saturday, September 17th, 2011
"Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, 'Lord, who is the one who betrays You?' So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, 'Lord, and what about this man?' Jesus said to him, 'If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!'"
    —John 21:20-22 (NASB)

Jesus never said He would treat us the same as everyone else, just according to the measure of our own obedience. We have no one to measure up to but our self. But, oh, how our eyes wander to the next person.

John 21:9-10 • Jesus Already Had Some Fish

Friday, September 16th, 2011
"So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, 'Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.'"
    —John 21:9-10 (NASB)

Jesus already had some fish. Even though the disciples were out fishing, and even though they were not successful until Jesus told them where to fish, He didn't actually need fish from them; He already had some fish.

John 20:6-10 • They Did Not Understand

Thursday, September 15th, 2011
"And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes."
    —John 20:6-10 (NASB)

There is much to learn from the sequence of events pertaining to Christ's resurrection, just as much as the sequences pertaining to His trial and crucifixion, His ministry on earth, and even His birth. The order in which He would appear to specific individuals and groups is first and foremost an example of the biblical principle "the last shall be first, and the first last". (Mt. 20:16; Mk. 10:31; Lk. 13:30) It's also a very powerful lesson as to where signs and wonders fall in importance to one's faith. Because the greatest proof of faith is not in attesting to a sign or miracle, but simply believing in the Word of God alone.

John 19:28-30 • When You’re Absolutely Sure of God’s Will

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011
"After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, 'I am thirsty.' A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit."
       —John 19:28-30 (NASB)

Why is it that I tend to pray for and seek only good, personally beneficial things to be revealed to me as the will of God for my life? Why is it I don't simply pray and seek God's will regardless? After all, if God is in control, His will overcomes the temporal pains to provide multiplied, eternal blessings. Look what He did through Christ on the cross. If God worked through the worst of circumstances in His Son's life, why should I not believe the same will happen to me?

John 19:5, 14 • Both Man and King

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011
"Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, 'Behold, the Man!'…Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, 'Behold, your King!'"
    —John 19:5, 14 (NASB)

I'm sure there's some measure of sarcasm in Pilate's intentionally presenting Jesus first as "the Man" and later as "your King", but it's telling nonetheless. The Jews held to the belief that there were two pictures of the Messiah presented in the Old Testament represented by Joseph and David. The Messiah in the character of Joseph was commonly called "The Suffering Servant', while the Messiah in the character of David was referred to as "The Conquering King". In the course of His final earthly trial, Jesus the true Messiah is rejected both as "the Man" and "your King". In other words, they rejected both aspects of the Messiah which they expected to begin with.

John 18:37 • To Testify to the Truth

Monday, September 12th, 2011
"Therefore Pilate said to Him, 'So You are a king?' Jesus answered, 'You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.'"
       —John 18:37 (NASB)

There are only 2 kind of people in this world: Those of the truth, and those of the lie. "The Lie" is the age-old deception of Satan first presented to Eve that "you will be like God". (Genesis 3:5) As Paul puts it,

"For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen."
       —Romans 1:24 (NASB)

John 18:4-6 • They Drew Back

Sunday, September 11th, 2011
"So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, 'Whom do you seek?' They answered Him, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said to them, 'I am He.' And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, 'I am He,' they drew back and fell to the ground."
    —John 18:4-6 (NASB)

I just want to take this opportunity to point something out that is consistent throughout the whole of the Bible: falling "toward" and falling "away". People who come into Christ's presence to truly worship Him and submit to Him fall towards Him, fall at His feet; those rejecting Him or being judged by Him always fall away from Him just as happens here. I really think we need to grasp the full meaning of this in order to properly understand one of the major proofs that Binny Hinn is a false prophet. Notice how he blows and touches people who all literally fall away. It's physical evidence which accompanies many such false spiritual movements errantly attributed to the Spirit.
