Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Exodus 40:36-38 • Smoke and Fire

Saturday, February 11th, 2012
"Throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel."
    —Exodus 40:36-38 (NASB)

The signs and wonders of God always have a dual purpose in how they work for those who follow Him versus those who don't. For Believers they are the reassurance and comfort that He is not just in control but performing everything in accordance with His Word; in other words, they're an affirmation of faith. For others, they are judgments both revealing and condemning unbelief.

Exodus 36:4-7 • Enough, Already

Friday, February 10th, 2012
"And all the skillful men who were performing all the work of the sanctuary came, each from the work which he was performing, and they said to Moses, 'The people are bringing much more than enough for the construction work which the Lord commanded us to perform.' So Moses issued a command, and a proclamation was circulated throughout the camp, saying, 'Let no man or woman any longer perform work for the contributions of the sanctuary.' Thus the people were restrained from bringing any more. For the material they had was sufficient and more than enough for all the work, to perform it."
    —Exodus 36:4-7 (NASB)

What a concept. Moses didn't worry about forming a "management reserve" or placing the excess in investments that could provide interest for the continued operation of the ministry; he called an end to contributions to the work of building the Tabernacle, "For the material they had was sufficient and more than enough for all the work, to perform it".

Exodus 35:1-3 • The Correct Context for the Things of God

Thursday, February 9th, 2012
"Then Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and said to them, 'These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do: For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a sabbath of complete rest to the Lord; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath day.'"
    —Exodus 35:1-3 (NASB)

From Exodus 35 to the end of the book is described the making and establishing of the Tabernacle, priesthood, and all that goes with them. Why in the world would Moses preface the call to contribute materials, the call into service those to make everything needed—and finally putting it all together operationally—by beginning with a call to obey the Sabbath? What does observing the Sabbath have to do with erecting God's Tabernacle? Everything.

Exodus 34:6-8 • First a Savior, Then a Judge

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012
"Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, 'The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.' Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship."
    —Exodus 34:6-8 (NASB)

The first time God appeared to Moses, He also revealed His name. But in that first revelation, God characterized Himself as Savior.

"He said also, 'I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, 'I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.'"

Exodus 33:12-13 • That I May Know You

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012
"Then Moses said to the Lord, 'See, You say to me, "Bring up this people!" But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, "I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight." Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.'"
    —Exodus 33:12-13 (NASB)

Our relationship with God is not one-way. It is reciprocal. Granted, it all begins with Him, or as Moses here states, "You have said, 'I have known you by name'". This is a very personal and complimentary statement. To be known by name in biblical parlance is not like being listed in the phone book with thousands of other names that can be looked up whenever convenient. It's to be personally known, to have God's eyes and thoughts and mind—His whole attention—aware and affectionately trained on that person. And how can we in turn "know" Him in the same way? Through His Word. Or as Moses states, "Let me know Your ways that I may know You".

Exodus 32:25-26 • Out of Control

Monday, February 6th, 2012
"Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control—for Aaron had let them get out of control to be a derision among their enemies— then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, 'Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!' And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him."
    —Exodus 32:25-26 (NASB)

I often pass by a small church that has a large banner on the outside proclaiming "House of Prayer" and a sign in the front window proudly inviting, "Party Here Sunday Mornings". Perhaps they're well-intentioned, but there appears to be a contradiction leading one to wonder whether or not they're out of control. Admittedly it's the same despair I feel in the pit of my stomach when observing such things as being "slain in the Spirit" or any of a number of other strange and out of control behaviors that are attributed to worshiping God or the presence of the Holy Spirit. This comes from knowing that such behavior makes them "a derision among their enemies". That is, it unnecessarily provides aid and comfort and even ammunition to the enemies of the Light.

Exodus 31:2-3, 11 • According to All That I Have Commanded

Sunday, February 5th, 2012
"See, I have called by name Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship…they are to make them according to all that I have commanded you."
    —Exodus 31:2-3, 11 (NASB)

God has just spent the past 6 chapters of Exodus providing the plans and requirements for all the things that need to be made in and for the Tabernacle, which will all later also appear or be duplicated in the Temple. He provided the specifications of all the "things" that were needed to serve Him along with how to prepare and use them. Finally, He provides the talents and skill that will be employed to make them. God doesn't just provide the plan, but the abilities necessary to accomplish it. God did not leave it up to humans to employ and display their own vision and talents, but set them in motion to fulfill His purposes according to one simple guideline: "They are to make them according to all that I have commanded you." They were to use their God-given gifts in strict accordance with His Word.
