Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Joshua 24:25-27 • A Familar Place

Saturday, March 7th, 2009
“So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. Joshua said to all the people, ‘Behold, this stone shall be for a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; thus it shall be for a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.'”
    —Joshua 24:25-27 (NASB)

Under an oak tree at Shechem might sound familiar because this wasn’t the first time a significant spiritual event took place there. It was this exact place that elicited a personal commitment to God from both Abraham and later Jacob. It was a place of making a life-long commitment of obedience to God’s Word.

Joshua 24:14-15 • Serve Him in Sincerity and Truth

Friday, March 6th, 2009
“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
    —Joshua 24:14-15 (NASB)

The last 12 words of verse 15 is one of the best known and oft-quoted Scriptures. As with many well-known passages, seeing it within the context of the whole of Scripture around it makes one realize that its true meaning may be quite different from what has essentially become a “slogan” over time by its being repeated alone as an isolated saying. In the recent past a now-famous organization used this phrase over and over again to affirm family values, to reinforce fervent affirmation of the family unit. While I wouldn’t argue the legitimacy of such values in and of themselves, I might take issue as to whether that is the correct context of this Scripture.

Joshua 23:6-9 • The Biblical Definition of Tolerance

Thursday, March 5th, 2009
“Be very firm, then, to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you may not turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you will not associate with these nations, these which remain among you, or mention the name of their gods, or make anyone swear by them, or serve them, or bow down to them. But you are to cling to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day. For the Lord has driven out great and strong nations from before you; and as for you, no man has stood before you to this day.”
    —Joshua 23:6-9 (NASB)

For the record, I definitely and clearly understand that the calling given to Israel to destroy several nations then living in Canaan was specific to Israel at that time, specific to just those particular groups as a judgment of God, and that it does not carry over to the church today as some sort of “crusader mandate” to wage a literal war against non-believers. But what IS supposed to carry over is a total lack of tolerance for false religions.

Joshua 22:25-27 • The Border Between Us

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009
‘”For the Lord has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; you have no portion in the Lord. So your sons may make our sons stop fearing the Lord.’ Therefore we said, ‘Let us build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice; rather it shall be a witness between us and you and between our generations after us, that we are to perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings, so that your sons will not say to our sons in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”‘”
    —Joshua 22:25-27 (NASB)

There are a lot of reasons to build or erect a memorial to God or man. They can be as grand as an entire building or statue or as simple as dedicating an individual hymnal or donating money in someone’s name. All are intended as some kind of reminder—brief or perpetual—of someone and their special place in our memory. However, although they may exist, I can’t think of a single memorial whose intended purpose is to remind us of our obligation to maintain current relationships. We’re quick to make connections with the past or promises for the future, but slow to fortify the things of the here and now that are actually the basis for the past and future.

Joshua 22:5 • Measuring Love

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009
“Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God and walk in all His ways and keep His commandments and hold fast to Him and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
    —Joshua 22:5 (NASB)

Can “love” be measured? This is not a rhetorical question, but a challenge to the worldly definition of what it means to love versus the biblical definition. Biblical love is not an intangible, unquantifiable product whose width and height and depth cannot be grasped; biblical love is measured by the very visible and quantifiable attributes of obedience and faithfulness.

Joshua 21:45 • All Came to Pass

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
“Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”
    —Joshua 21:45 (NASB)

God fulfilled all of His promises, even though He had to wait a generation to do it. The first generation that was miraculously brought out of Egypt, given the Law, and brought to take possession of Canaan did not see those promises fulfilled. The next generation—after a delay of 40 years—did. The difference was not due to something deficient on God’s part but on the people’s; the second generation trusted God where His promises were concerned, the first generation did not.

Joshua 13:1, 7 • From Generation to Generation

Sunday, March 1st, 2009
“Now Joshua was old and advanced in years when the Lord said to him, ‘You are old and advanced in years, and very much of the land remains to be possessed…Now therefore, apportion this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.'”
    —Joshua 13:1, 7 (NASB)

It seems to be a universal human trait to see history as something “living” and “moving” only as it has done so during the short span of our lifetime. And equally strong seems the same trait regarding the future—we tend to focus only on our own future with little acknowledgment for future generations. Perhaps it’s a monument to pride and self-centeredness that we acknowledge previous and future generations so little that we lose sight of the fact that our own generation is but a part of an overall stream that began too far back for us to fully comprehend its path to our point, nor can we fully envision the path and effect of its future course.
