Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

1 Samuel 30:23-24 • Pride as an Amnesiac

Saturday, April 25th, 2009
“Then David said, ‘You must not do so, my brothers, with what the Lord has given us, who has kept us and delivered into our hand the band that came against us. And who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike.'”
    —1 Samuel 30:23-24 (NASB)

David always thinks of God first. One of the things that’s evident in his every conversation—whether with a king, a friend, family, or the enemy—is to alter his response so that it brings attention to God’s will and way. He not only does this in times of crisis and distress but, as here, during times of success as well.

1 Samuel 30:5-6 • Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

Friday, April 24th, 2009
“Now David’s two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
    —1 Samuel 30:5-6 (NASB)

Under the “When-It-Rains-It-Pours Dept.” is the not unusual phenomena that things often go from bad to worse to even more unbelievably worse. Everyone following David has lost their family in an attack by the enemy when the main group was away. David himself has lost his wives. They’ve all lost all their possessions as well. And human nature being what it is, everyone blames David to the point that “the people spoke of stoning him”. As often as persecution comes from outside the church, it comes from inside. Instead of bonding together against a common enemy, everyone turns on their own leader, and Satan’s goal through the use of persecution is complete in its successful achievment of division, dissension, and destruction.

1 Samuel 28:5-7 • When Servants Fail to Serve

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009
“When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, ‘Seek for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.’ And his servants said to him, ‘Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at En-dor.'”
    —1 Samuel 28:5-7 (NASB)

I don’t really want to talk about Saul in this situation so much as those around him. Yes, Saul is responsible for his own decisions and actions, but what is wrong with his servants, those who are supposed to care for him more than any other? Not only does no one bother to even hint that Saul’s request is completely contrary to someone who is supposed to be devoted exclusively to the One True God, but they become accessories to the crime.

1 Samuel 24:2-5 • When Looks are Deceiving

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009
“Then Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. He came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave. The men of David said to him, ‘Behold, this is the day of which the Lord said to you, “Behold; I am about to give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good to you.”‘ Then David arose and cut off the edge of Saul’s robe secretly. It came about afterward that David’s conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe.”
    —1 Samuel 24:2-5 (NASB)

One of the recurring lessons we’re taught through the example and life of David is that we can’t assume a course of action based on appearances. Goliath “looked” unbeatable. Saul at times “appeared” to be a friend and ally. And here in the cave, at least to David’s men, God’s will appeared to have brought everything ideally together. The timing and the opportunity couldn’t be better. It was obvious to all present that this was God’s will, that only divine intervention could have made this happen. As with all “obvious” situations, the course of action encouraged by those present was equally obvious.

1 Samuel 23:1-2 • Stopping to Inquire of the Lord

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
“Then they told David, saying, ‘Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors.’ So David inquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I go and attack these Philistines?’ And the Lord said to David, ‘Go and attack the Philistines and deliver Keilah.'”
    —1 Samuel 23:1-2 (NASB)

The Philistines have been Israel’s enemies since the time of the judges. Samson fought them. Samuel fought them. Saul fought them. And this certainly isn’t the first time David will fight them. They are the acknowledged enemies of God. So isn’t it obvious what should be done? Why does David hesitate to ask God what seems to be a rhetorical question?

1 Samuel 17:26 • Fighting From Victory

Monday, April 20th, 2009
“Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, ‘What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?'”
    —1 Samuel 17:26 (NASB)

As you read through the biblical account of what has become commonly labeled “David & Goliath” in 1 Samuel 17, carefully note what each person says followed by how David responds. Everyone else states the situation in earthly terms, from Goliath’s intimidating stature to offering earthly rewards to anyone who overcomes him. But in each case, David re-states the situation using spiritual terms instead of earthly. He makes it known that the issue is not how man sees and approaches the situation, but God.

1 Samuel 16:6-7 • Don’t You Want the Best for God?

Sunday, April 19th, 2009
“When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him.’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'”
    —1 Samuel 16:6-7 (NASB)

For nearly all my life I’ve heard the recurring argument—most often associated with music, but with other such things as well—”Don’t you want the best for God?” This well-intentioned, sincerely presented point has been put forth to justify why someone is not “good enough” to be on the worship team, why certain music is “better”, why so much of a building’s budget has been dedicated to ornamentation and decoration, and for a myriad other things that will present a church or activity at the highest earthly quality possible.
