Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

2 Samuel 24:25 • Evidence of a Right Heart

Saturday, May 16th, 2009
“David built there an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Thus the Lord was moved by prayer for the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.”
    —”2 Samuel 24:25 (NASB)

One of the most misunderstood biblical traditions is the sacrifices. Perhaps we’re too quick to look at it as a form of currency. On the surface it appears to be the payment that is required for sin so it’s easy to reason, “Make the payment, be forgiven.” But God was not so moved by David’s “burnt offerings and peace offerings”, but “by prayer for the land”. The sacrifices are supposed to be the final, visible evidence of a heart wholly returned and committed exclusively to God.

2 Samuel 22:26-28 • The Dual Edge of God’s Justice

Friday, May 15th, 2009
“With the kind You show Yourself kind,
With the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
With the pure You show Yourself pure,
And with the perverted You show Yourself astute.
And You save an afflicted people;
But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase.”
    —2 Samuel 22:26-28 (NASB)

“Justice” and “judgment” are terms that we might relate most to someone guilty of wrong, worthy of punishment. This is only one side of God’s justice—to resolve the inequities of a sinner’s treatment of others in this life—but there is another side: Rewarding the righteous. Whereas sinners are judged and condemned, the righteous are judged and redeemed. The message is that EVERYONE will be judged and justice meted out, whether for condemnation or redemption. No one will “escape” judgment—they’ll only experience a different outcome depending on their personal, behavioral choices.

2 Samuel 22:2-4 • The Right Place to Take a Stand

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
“He said,
‘The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge;
My savior, You save me from violence.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.’”
    —2 Samuel 22:2-4 (NASB)

There are two groups of things listed here: “rock”, “fortress”, “refuge”, “shield”, and “stronghold”; and “deliverer”, “God”, “horn of my salvation”, and “savior”. One of the common denominators of the first group is that they’re all fixed in one place. They’re strongholds built on a strong foundation with strong walls for protection and the best place to be when the enemy attacks. The second group reveals God’s role in that He responds to our call and comes to our rescue. The biblical definition of how to prepare for, fight, and win spiritual battles is much different than our human notions of what it means to fight and win.

2 Samuel 20:19-21 • Steps to Addressing Heresy

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
“‘I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the inheritance of the Lord?’ Joab replied, ‘Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy! Such is not the case. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Only hand him over, and I will depart from the city.’ And the woman said to Joab, ‘Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.’”
    —2 Samuel 20:19-21 (NASB)

To summarize what is really being said in this exchange with a woman of the city Joab is in the process of destroying in order to get to the traitor Sheba hiding inside, is actually a dispute concerning how to act according to the Word of God. In Deuteronomy 20, God provided laws for warfare—a sort of “code of conduct”, if you will—which stipulated under what conditions something was to be captured or completely destroyed.

2 Samuel 20:1-2 • Reinterpret, Redefine, Reroute

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
“Now a worthless fellow happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said,

‘We have no portion in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
Every man to his tents, O Israel!’

So all the men of Israel withdrew from following David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah remained steadfast to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.”
    —2 Samuel 20:1-2 (NASB)

The definition of a “worthless fellow” is someone who has completely rejected God’s Law and lives according to his own. Sheba isn’t trying to convince others of an alternate interpretation or opinion—he is calling into question the whole of God’s commandments and encouraging everyone to go back to their own place to undertake following their own will and ways. Sheba gives the illusion of being a respectable authority who facilitates the obliteration of God’s ways, paving the way for each individual to do whatever seems right in their own eyes.

2 Samuel 15:1-3 • The Facade for Self

Monday, May 11th, 2009
“Now it came about after this that Absalom provided for himself a chariot and horses and fifty men as runners before him. Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way to the gate; and when any man had a suit to come to the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, ‘From what city are you?’ And he would say, ‘Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.’ Then Absalom would say to him, ‘See, your claims are good and right, but no man listens to you on the part of the king.’”
    —2 Samuel 15:1-3 (NASB)

One of the ways that Israel was visibly different from the nations around her was in the way her kings and military were equipped. Chariots and horses were staples of the kings and armies of the surrounding nations—they were oddities in Israel. This is because whereas they symbolized man’s ultimate, personal attempt to do things according to his own strength, the lack of them portrayed trust in God to deliver regardless of the earthly circumstances.

2 Samuel 13:3-5 • Friend of Foe?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
“But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd man. He said to him, ‘O son of the king, why are you so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?’ Then Amnon said to him, ‘I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.’ Jonadab then said to him, ‘Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your father comes to see you, say to him, “Please let my sister Tamar come and give me some food to eat, and let her prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat from her hand.”‘”
    —2 Samuel 13:3-5 (NASB)

It’s not 100% but overwhelmingly true that sin can be identified as something that provides immediate pleasure accompanied by long-term negative results, and that righteous acts often provide no immediate satisfaction but produce long-term positive results. The personality that has become engaged in a lifestyle of sin is revealed by their incessant demands for immediate satisfaction and often keep company with persons of similar demeanor. This is why I’ve come to appreciate most the people in my life who consistently and foremost tell me the absolute truth.
