Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Jonah 4:10-11 • The Work Yet to Come

Saturday, September 5th, 2009
“Then the Lord said, ‘You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight. Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?’”
    —Jonah 4:10-11 (NASB)

Jonah is certainly a biblical type of Christ. Even Christ Himself so stated it. [1] A biblical type is someone or something that prefigures or points to something much larger that God will do later in another time, through another person. Jonah’s 3-day journey from life to death to life again teaches about Christ’s resurrection and the power of salvation to bring us from death to life. But Jonah has the distinction of being another biblical type as well: He prefigures Israel itself.

Jonah 3:10-4:1 • Displeasure & Anger over Grace

Friday, September 4th, 2009
“When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry.”
    —Jonah 3:10-4:1 (NASB)

I wish I could say that Jonah’s behavior was unique and strange and inexplicable, but I’ve seen it in Christians. It’s very similar to the same attitude the “good” son had in Jesus’ Parable of the Prodigal Son. [1] Upon hearing the commotion being made over the return of his wayward brother who’d squandered his inheritance and caused the family so much pain, the other son exhibited anger and indignation.

Jonah 3:8-9 • They Already Knew

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
“‘But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish.’”
    —Jonah3:8-9 (NASB)

By all accounts, Jonah’s message to Nineveh was succinct and brief. He does not appear to have engaged in long, standing sermons, but keeping it short so as to tell it as he went along through the city. It was long enough to catch ears as he walked in and out of their range of hearing. And yet, like all messages of salvation, the hearer to which it was directed already knew in their heart what they needed to do; they were already aware of the specific sin from which they needed to repent.

Jonah 2:4, 7 • He’s Always Ready to Listen

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
“So I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.’…
While I was fainting away,
I remembered the Lord,
And my prayer came to You,
Into Your holy temple.”
    —Jonah 2:4, 7 (NASB)

This is a fascinating, real-life application of Solomon’s dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem. It’s worth reviewing the whole of 1 Kings 8 to see that in the course of dedicating the temple, Solomon never mentions the sacrifices, rituals, or even the priesthood as God’s primary purpose for the role of the temple, but that it is rather to be a focus for prayer, whether one is worshiping inside it or so far away that all they can do is turn towards and remember it.

Jonah 1:17 • Recognizing the Sign

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
“And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.”
    —Jonah 1:17 (NASB)

It’s positively astounding how much attention this has been given not just by Christians and theologians, but even non-believers and secular academics. Over the centuries we’ve received reports of bodies found inside large-sized fish and there have been other cultures and religions which have plagiarized and adapted this story for their own. But what many fail to realize is what this truly is as identified by Christ Himself: it’s a sign. But not the sign isn’t about the fish, but Jonah.

“‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.’ And He left them and went away.”
    —Matthew 16:4 (NASB)

Jonah 1:4-6 • Non-Believers Know Best

Monday, August 31st, 2009
“The Lord hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up. Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep. So the captain approached him and said, ‘How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.’”
    —Jonah 1:4-6 (NASB)

There’s somewhat of an amusing irony here. Having refused to heed God’s Word, God sends His prophet from the Jews to the heathen Gentiles. So it must have been unsettling when Jonah realized it took a heathen Gentile captain of the ship to awaken God’s prophet to what God was doing. Just as Isreal had a problem recognizing and responding to God’s Word and ways, so did Jonah.

Jonah 4:11 • What about the Others?

Friday, September 8th, 2006
“Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?”
    —Jonah 4:11 (NASB)

Today we call them toddlers. In Jonah’s time, children 3 years old and younger were called “persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand”. Jonah was so fixed on his desire for the destruction of a sinful city of approximately 600,000 that he failed to recognize not ALL of the population was equally sinful. In point of face, a significant portion of the population were yet innocent of the actions and choices of the rest.
