Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Hosea 14:9 • The Final Word

Saturday, September 19th, 2009
“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
Whoever is discerning, let him know them.
For the ways of the Lord are right,
And the righteous will walk in them,
But transgressors will stumble in them.”
    —Hosea 14:9 (NASB)

Just in case it slipped past you, the common thread throughout the entire book of Hosea that summarizes the root cause of their problem is their treatment of the Word of God. Why do they treat each other so poorly? They’re not following God’s commandment to love their neighbor. Why do they pursue false worship and false gods? They have discarded God’s Word to love and be devoted to Him alone. Why do they seek the authority and protection of surrounding nations? They have cast aside His Word of authority and protection for an earthly one they perceive to be stronger. God states repeatedly that their going through the motions of observing the rituals associated with the temple, festivals, and priesthood are to no avail because He knows that they’ve rejected the very Word that provided them in the first place.

Hosea 12:12-13 • Keeping One’s Roots Honest

Friday, September 18th, 2009
“Now Jacob fled to the land of Aram,
And Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
But by a prophet the Lord brought Israel from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was kept.”
    —Hosea 12:12-13 (NASB)

One of the human race’s common character flaws transcending race, culture, and time is its inclination to re-write history. As life unfolds, there is a tendency to interpret one’s past in a different light to conform to an image they’d rather project rather than the cold, hard truth of the original matter. One of the battles that seems to be fought by every generation of every culture is the degree to which history is re-written to fit the present.

Hosea 11:1-4 • With Bonds of Love

Thursday, September 17th, 2009
“When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And out of Egypt I called My son.
The more they called them,
The more they went from them;
They kept sacrificing to the Baals
And burning incense to idols.
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,
I took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I healed them.
I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love,
And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and fed them.”
    —Hosea 11:1-4 (NASB)

I would characterize God’s pouring out of His heart here as that of the perfect, loving parent. He has cared and nurtured us, guided our growth, observed our mistakes and even times of rebellion, but never lost the love and desire only a parent can have for its child. Parents always see the potential, always work towards bringing it to fruition.

Hosea 6:5-7 • Variations of the Word

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
“Therefore I have hewn them in pieces by the prophets;
I have slain them by the words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that goes forth.
For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice,
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
But like Adam they have transgressed the covenant;
There they have dealt treacherously against Me.”
    —Hosea 6:5-7 (NASB)

It’s actually quite a testimony for the grace and love of God that He provides so many opportunities to come into a right relationship with Him. He has invoked multiple communication channels so that there’s quite a variety, even overlapping chances to hear and respond to Him. Here are metioned three: “the prophets”, “the words of My mouth”, and “the judgments”.

Hosea 4:6 • Lack of Knowledge

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being My priest.
Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.”
    —Hosea 4:6 (NASB)

It doesn’t take a lot of Bible reading to find out that the biblical definition of “hearing”, “understanding”, or “knowing” is proved by the same, common thing: Doing. If you don’t put into practice what God has said, you don’t know a thing according to His view.

Hosea 3:1-3 • Walking before Talking

Monday, September 14th, 2009
“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.’ So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a half of barley. Then I said to her, ‘You shall stay with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man; so I will also be toward you.'”
    —Hosea 3:1-3 (NASB)

Let’s summarize the amazing opening chapters of Hosea. God instructs Hosea to take a wife, knowing full well in advance that her chief character flaw is unfaithfulness. She bears Hosea three children and leaves him, apparently returning to a life of prostitution. God then instructs Hosea to take her back and re-establish a love relationship with her. Hosea finds her in the process of being sold into slavery, purchases her (the biblical term is “redeems”), and restores her forever in love. Is there anyone out there that doesn’t see how Hosea is a type of Christ, in that this is precisely what Christ has done for us?
