Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Isaiah 54:7-8 • For a Brief Moment

Saturday, October 24th, 2009
“‘For a brief moment I forsook you,
But with great compassion I will gather you.
In an outburst of anger
I hid My face from you for a moment,
But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you,’
Says the Lord your Redeemer.”
    —Isaiah 54:7-8 (NASB)

I don’t know how the last moments of my life on this earth will play out. Like all those awaiting the Lord’s return, I hope to experience the rapture or life under Christ’s Millennial Reign. Statistically speaking, however, the odds are death. Christians as passengers on airplanes are no insurance against accidents. But regardless of how it ends, I find these verses comforting. The end lasts only for “a brief moment”, but God’s subsequent compassion for all eternity.

Isaiah 53:10-12• His Reward

Friday, October 23rd, 2009
“But the Lord was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.”
    —Isaiah 53:10-12 (NASB)

No, God the Father was not “happy” to see His Son’s suffering and death. His pleasure was in seeing His Son accomplish His will, of seeing His work completed on behalf of all creation. His greatest pleasure was in rewarding His Son for carrying out His Father’s will, to lavish on Him the things that truly mattered and would make an actual difference. It’s the same for us. God desires to see us come into His kingdom having accomplished His will in this life so that we will experience the riches of the next.

Isaiah 53:7-8 • His Resignation

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
    —Isaiah 53:7-8 (NASB)

Why do some people focus on signs and miracles as the evidence of a Christ-like faith? No, I don’t dispute that such things wrought in Christ’s life came about except by faith, but these aren’t the only faith examples. What about the times of trial? He also exhibited faith in times of rejection, persecution, and even all the way to death itself. If we’re going to accept Christ as the example by which to live by, we’re going to have to accept His ENTIRE life’s example extending both through times of triumph and times of trial.

Isaiah 53:4-6 • His Redemption

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009
“Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.”
    —Isaiah 53:4-6 (NASB)

There’s quite a contrast here if we did nothing else but focus on the pronouns, such as “His scourging” versus “our transgressions”. We need to be continually reminded of and drawn to the foot of the cross because it is the single, universal act on behalf of all mankind which simultaneously reaches out to each and every one of us individually. He did it for “all” at the same time He did it specifically for us.

Isaiah 53:1-3 • His Rejection

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
“Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
    —Isaiah 53:1-3 (NASB)

I found it quite fascinating that a Christian evangelist to the Jews stated that he never begins witnessing to them from the New Testament, but from the Old. He cited Jesus’ own statement to the Jews of His time,

“‘For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?'”
    —John 5:46-467 (NASB)

Isaiah 52:13-15 • Back to the Future

Monday, October 19th, 2009
“Behold, My servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted.
Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
So His appearance was marred more than any man
And His form more than the sons of men.
Thus He will sprinkle many nations,
Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him;
For what had not been told them they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand.”
    —Isaiah 52:13-15 (NASB)

Understanding biblical prophecy requires an adjustment to learn how to view time as God sees it. He is outside the constraints of our time-space limitations. Think of time as a line whose entirety from beginning to end God can see at a single glance because He’s standing separate from it, able to see it whole all at once. This helps explain how He can speak through the likes of Isaiah, sometimes mentioning many future events that occur at different times within a single thought. He sees their cause and effect on multiple points in history, not necessarily as lone, isolated events. This becomes evident in passages such as this where the verbs quickly change from “will be” to “was” back to “will” again.

Isaiah 50:4-5 • The Biblical Model of Discipleship

Sunday, October 18th, 2009
“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples,
That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.
The Lord God has opened My ear;
And I was not disobedient
Nor did I turn back.”
    —Isaiah 50:4-5 (NASB)

Many terms trace their origins to the Bible, but most now have everyday meanings contrary to their biblical origins. Sometimes it’s purposeful as man tries to avoid accountability by redefining it, and sometimes it’s just because the term gets used in conjunction with other things and obtains some worldly baggage along the way. For instance, take a poll as to what others say are the identifying characteristics of a disciple. Ask them what it means to be “discipled”. How do the answers compare to Scripture? It’s both sad and alarming at how divergent the 21st Century definition has wandered from the original.
