Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Esther 8:15-17 • Biblical Social Activism

Saturday, July 17th, 2010
“Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a large crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple; and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. For the Jews there was light and gladness and joy and honor. In each and every province and in each and every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree arrived, there was gladness and joy for the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the dread of the Jews had fallen on them.”
    —Esther 8:15-17 (NASB)

One of the repeated topics of discussion concerning the book of Esther is that there is no direct mention of Yahweh. It is the only Old Testament book not quoted by the New Testament, and curiously it is not found among what we call the Dead Sea Scrolls. But when the Old Testament canon was finally recognized by Jewish authorities, it was nonetheless included, and Jews greatly acknowledge while celebrating Purim on which these events were based that they are celebrating God’s deliverance. The rabbis of old associated Esther with the Day of Atonement. But I believe the strongest evidence of God is in the statement, “And many among the peoples of the land became Jews”. NO ONE goes through this process without having a very strong connection to God to motivate them.

Esther 6:6-9 • The Desire for Personal Recognition

Friday, July 16th, 2010
“So Haman came in and the king said to him, ‘What is to be done for the man whom the king desires to honor?’ And Haman said to himself, ‘Whom would the king desire to honor more than me?’ Then Haman said to the king, ‘For the man whom the king desires to honor, let them bring a royal robe which the king has worn, and the horse on which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown has been placed; and let the robe and the horse be handed over to one of the king’s most noble princes and let them array the man whom the king desires to honor and lead him on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, “Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor.”‘”
    —Esther 6:6-9 (NASB)

As a new creation in Christ, the list of things God has provided for us is astonishing. It began before the creation of the world and extends into eternity, and from our present, limited view has brought great spiritual riches for our past, present, and future. Just the fact that we are known by Him should be enough, but His desire for a relationship with Him brings much, much more. I guess it should not be any surprise that this new family, just like any family, might have a few siblings who desire more attention than the rest, who are not satisfied with what has been given but, in the end, want it all.

Esther 5:11-13 • The Desire to be Worshiped

Thursday, July 15th, 2010
“Then Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, and the number of his sons, and every instance where the king had magnified him and how he had promoted him above the princes and servants of the king. Haman also said, ‘Even Esther the queen let no one but me come with the king to the banquet which she had prepared; and tomorrow also I am invited by her with the king. Yet all of this does not satisfy me every time I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.'”
    —Esther 5:11-13 (NASB)

This is one of the truly remarkable portions of Scripture providing insight into the very character and working of both Satan and the Antichrist, both whom are typified in Haman. Unsatisfied as the most powerful being created, discontent with all that the king has given to honor him, it ultimately means nothing to him because his pride has taken over to the degree that the only thing which will satiate his desires is to be worshiped like the king. That is the defining goal we must never forget when it comes to Satan in general and his specific agent the Antichrist: it is about being worshiped.

Esther 4:13-14 • Such a Time as This

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
“Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, ‘Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?'”
    —Esther 4:13-14 (NASB)

One of the unique characteristics of human beings across all races, religions, and demographic groups is their belief in some kind of destiny, some kind of purpose for which they have been born. This is the basic format of all biographies which detail the “chance” events which came together to bring someone famous to the crossroads of their accomplishments. And it is at the very heart of the salvation experience when it becomes clear that God indeed has a calling for us. But what happens should we arrive at the pinnacle of that calling and refuse to carry it out? With God there is always free choice, and such choices never derail His plans; He simply replaces us with someone else.

Esther 2:5-7 • No Mother or Father

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010
“Now there was at the citadel in Susa a Jew whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite, who had been taken into exile from Jerusalem with the captives who had been exiled with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had exiled. He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had no father or mother. Now the young lady was beautiful of form and face, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.”
    —Esther 2:5-7 (NASB)

The book of Esther, like the Song of Solomon, is communicating much more to us than the surface-level story they present. There are other layers of meaning if one studies them from an eschatological point of view or especially as they relate to the Messiah. It surprises most to learn that the ancient rabbinic scholars’ teaching concerning Esther is that she is a type, a kind of foreshadowing, of the Messiah. One of the few female types in the Old Testament, it was commonly taught that she typified the Messiah in the way that He would deliver His people, and in the distinctive characteristic that the Messiah would have no mother or father.
