Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Ezekiel 46:8-10 • Coming In & Going Out

Saturday, April 10th, 2010
“‘When the prince enters, he shall go in by way of the porch of the gate and go out by the same way. But when the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed feasts, he who enters by way of the north gate to worship shall go out by way of the south gate. And he who enters by way of the south gate shall go out by way of the north gate. No one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered but shall go straight out. When they go in, the prince shall go in among them; and when they go out, he shall go out.'”
    —Ezekiel 46:8-10 (NASB)

In the seemingly, never-ending quest to biblically establish the structure and purpose of God’s people coming together, we are provided with a glimpse into something that has deeper meaning than merely directing traffic. God’s people aren’t supposed to come together as some sort of insulation against the world, acting one way when in the world and another when gathered together in His presence, but are supposed to go from His presence changed and refusing to go back to the ways from which they came. It was supposed to be a source of strength for going out into the world and living according to God’s Word and ways, not restricting God’s Word and ways only to their gathering together.

Ezekiel 44:23 • Teaching the Difference

Friday, April 9th, 2010
“‘Moreover, they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.'”
    —Ezekiel 44:23 (NASB)

Through Ezekiel, God provides a contrast of the characteristics of a true priesthood that is doing His will according to His Word to that of the historically corrupt priesthoods experienced by nearly every generation. This is fascinating stuff if you consider that God communicated through Peter that we “are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood”. :”(1 Peter 2:5)”: Many of the underlying principles of the Old Testament priesthood teach something about the New Testament priesthood. To what degree do you suppose that we, too, are responsible to “teach My people the difference between the holy and the profane”?

Ezekiel 44:6-7 • God’s Commentary on Meetings

Thursday, April 8th, 2010
“‘You shall say to the rebellious ones, to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord God, ‘Enough of all your abominations, O house of Israel, when you brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in My sanctuary to profane it, even My house, when you offered My food, the fat and the blood; for they made My covenant void — this in addition to all your abominations.'”‘”
    —Ezekiel 44:6-7 (NASB)

I don’t know the exact date and time when it happened, but a fundamental attitude of the church changed in later generations than existed neither in the 1st Century New Testament church nor in the gathering of Old Testament Believers. In those original models, God’s people went OUT to contact and convert non-Believers, whereas the strategy changed to get them to come TO the Believers. The original requirements involved dedicating one’s self to God in advance of coming to the meeting place, which was not originally intended to operate in accommodation of attendees who are the least undecided — and therefore neutral in their ability to join in worship — and in some cases actually working outright against the Word and ways of God.

Ezekiel 44:1-3 • When a Gate is Just a Gate

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010
“‘Then He brought me back by the way of the outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces the east; and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the Lord God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut. As for the prince, he shall sit in it as prince to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter by way of the porch of the gate and shall go out by the same way.”‘”
    —Ezekiel 44:1-3 (NASB)

In the course of His First Coming, Christ fulfilled over 300 specific prophecies concerning Him in the Old Testament. 300! It didn’t seem to matter what “kind” of a Jew one was at that time — liberal, conservative, mainstream, or marginal — there were very, very few who DIDN’T believe the Messiah was about to come. Daniel and the prophets had provided a time line and specific details, the signs of the times were ripe and pointing to the fulfillment of all things, and here comes the carpenter from Nazareth, fulfilling these things left and right. Except that in spite of their awareness of Scripture and desire to see it fulfilled, most of them completely missed it. Don’t judge them too harshly…we’re in the same predicament today.

Ezekiel 43:10-12 • The Details Matter

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010
“‘As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities; and let them measure the plan. If they are ashamed of all that they have done, make known to them the design of the house, its structure, its exits, its entrances, all its designs, all its statutes, and all its laws. And write it in their sight, so that they may observe its whole design and all its statutes and do them. This is the law of the house: its entire area on the top of the mountain all around shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house.'”

When we first started the Walk with the Word reading schedule, the sneaky local pastor looked far enough ahead to ask me to fill in for him on a Sunday on which he planned a vacation. I refuse to retract “sneaky” ’cause after agreeing I looked at the reading schedule and discovered this weekend corresponded to teaching from 1 Chronicles 1-9, a relentless description of Israel’s genealogy. Most people get to that section of Scripture and skip on past. I actually made the faith step that if “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness”, :”(2 Timothy 3:16)”: that it had to apply to the many genealogies contained therein as well. It’s actually been a blessing and people are amazed at how much practical application I can extract from them. So what’s the deal with this temple and all these measurements?

Ezekiel 43:7-9 • The Place of My Throne

Monday, April 5th, 2010
“He said to me, ‘Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their harlotry and by the corpses of their kings when they die, by setting their threshold by My threshold and their door post beside My door post, with only the wall between Me and them. And they have defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger. Now let them put away their harlotry and the corpses of their kings far from Me; and I will dwell among them forever.'”
    —Ezekiel 43:7-9 (NASB)

During the times of the existence of the temples on earth, it was a common Jewish teaching that the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies was the place where God rested His feet. It was a teaching to visualize the fact that God’s actual presence could not be contained in the temple proper but that He extended His glory from heaven above to the earthly temple below. In His description through Ezekiel of the temple built to host the actual presence of the Messiah, we clearly see that all these things spoken through Ezekiel are quite literal, that this is “the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell”.

Ezekiel 40:3-4 • The Line & the Rod

Sunday, April 4th, 2010
“So He brought me there; and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze, with a line of flax and a measuring rod in his hand; and he was standing in the gateway. The man said to me, ‘Son of man, see with your eyes, hear with your ears, and give attention to all that I am going to show you; for you have been brought here in order to show it to you. Declare to the house of Israel all that you see.'”
    —Ezekiel 40:3-4 (NASB)

There are a lot of precise, measured plans and designs documented in Scripture. Examples are Noah’s ark, the tabernacle and all the things in it, the temple and all the things in it, the walls of Jerusalem, and the division of the land of Israel among the tribes. When God provides specifications, He expects them to be followed precisely. Several times in Scripture, when speaking of the future, God shows His messengers how He minutely scrutinizes whether something meets His specifications by measuring them, sometimes with a rod and sometimes a line. It has a dual meaning to teach us that God is holding us accountable for both our overall obedience to His Word as well as to every single, minute detail contained therein.
