—Daniel 12:10 (NASB)
Scripture uses specific terms describing the different roots and influences of sin, particularly as these terms describe categories of people in various stages of sin. The terms “sinner”, “backslider”, and “unbeliever”, to name a few examples, are not synonymous. Each describe someone who is in a different spiritual state and provides information as to what kind of relationship they have or have not had with the One True God. This is why it is important to note when Scripture speaks about “the wicked“, because the people being described in this category by this term are not merely struggling with sin or living through a temporary rough patch, but refers to someone engaged directly in evil. And such do so not by accident, but as an extension of their rebellion against what they know, or at one time knew to be, the truth.
