Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Habakkuk 2:20 • Be Silent Before Him

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
“But the Lord is in His holy temple.
Let all the earth be silent before Him.”
    —Habakkuk 2:20 (NASB)

Regardless of whether we’re a Believer or not, regardless of the place along the path to maturity we’re traversing compared to others both behind and in front, no matter what life situations we’re working through, sooner or later we will come face-to-face with God’s sovereignty. Whether we willfully and gladly embrace it, or begrudgingly and ashamedly accept it, there comes a time during every process when we’re confronted with the fact that the Creator is Ruler over the created.

Habakkuk 2:14 • Blessed Assurance

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009
“For the earth will be filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.”
    —Habakkuk 2:14 (NASB)

One of the hallmarks of science fiction is explaining how the future turns out. In almost every conjecture, the author proposes a future which never turns out to be exactly what is currently expected, but usually quite different due to unforeseen factors. We see this clearly in earth’s past. What Columbus set out to do, and what he ended up doing, were two entirely different things which had consequences for the entire planet for centuries to come. In all of man’s conjecture of the future, most often he disallows the fact that God has a plan which will radically alter the outcome.

Habakkuk 2:4 • Any Way You Cut It

Monday, November 9th, 2009
“But the righteous will live by his faith.”
    —Habakkuk 2:4 (NASB)

The first thing the commentaries all rush to point out about this verse is how, through Martin Luther, it sparked the Reformation. This biblical concept took root and changed the Christian theological landscape. I guess what I’m unclear about on this is whether Martin Luther was inspired while reading Habakkuk itself, or by the multiple New Testament references back to this verse. If I had my way, every Bible in the world would have its table of contents changed so that “Old Testament” reads “The Beginning”, “New Testament” reads “The Middle”, and a blank page inserted in the end titled “The End” so we’d treat the Bible as one, contiguous whole. This verse is a great example of God’s Word given as a consistent whole.

Habakkuk 2:2-3 • The Appointed Time

Sunday, November 8th, 2009
“Then the Lord answered me and said,
‘Record the vision
And inscribe it on tablets,
That the one who reads it may run.
For the vision is yet for the appointed time;
It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
For it will certainly come, it will not delay.'”
    —Habakkuk 2:2-3 (NASB)

You don’t show up to the first day of college expecting to be awarded your bachelor’s degree the following week. You don’t visit the doctor in your third month of pregnancy expecting to deliver the baby that day. You don’t scream at your 6 year-old because they haven’t finished medical school and given you loving grandchildren yet. So why don’t we get this when it comes not just to the fulfillment of God’s prophecies, but God’s will for our life in general? First comes “the vision”, then comes “the appointed time”.
