Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Zechariah 14:20-21 • In That Day

Saturday, May 29th, 2010
“In that day there will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, ‘HOLY TO THE LORD.’ And the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the bowls before the altar. Every cooking pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be holy to the Lord of hosts; and all who sacrifice will come and take of them and boil in them. And there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts in that day.”
    —Zechariah 14:20-21 (NASB)

Never lose sight of the fact that God originally spoke these words through Zechariah to a people stalled in their efforts to build God’s temple. They were fixated on the difficulty of their present circumstances and the task of completing a building for their day, but God explained that what they had begun was something far, far greater. Their work was not limited to its effects for their own lifetime, but merely a starting point for things that would not be ultimately fulfilled until the final age on earth when the Messiah comes back to personally reign. What was previously limited to just the Temple would be propagated throughout the whole earth. From this point on begins God’s final plan for restoring the entire earth to a spiritual state which can abide in His personal presence: holiness.

Zechariah 14:6-8 • The Coming Darkness

Friday, May 28th, 2010
“In that day there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle. For it will be a unique day which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but it will come about that at evening time there will be light. And in that day living waters will flow out of Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter.”
    —Zechariah 14:6-8 (NASB)

In a world where pessimism almost always seems much more prevalent than optimism, it is interesting that most if not all of the Christians songs about the End Times focus on the positive. In spite of the fact that a great percentage of End Times Scripture highlights the coming apostasy, deception, and accompanying spiritual darkness preceding the final events to come, Christians mostly sing about Christ’s return, His victory over the whole world to come, and the life promised after such things take place. I am not saying there is something wrong with that, just attempting to highlight the fact that there is a very big event associated with the Last Days that we do not give a whole lot of attention to: the spiritual darkness to come.

Zechariah 13:1 • Seeing the Fountain

Thursday, May 27th, 2010
“‘In that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity.’”
    —Zechariah 13:1 (NASB)

This is one of those things which requires an acute awareness of what it meant to be an Old Testament believer living under the Law. A significant part of the Old Testament process for dealing with sin and impurity had to do with ritual washings, a kind of teaching of what it took to be spiritually cleansed. One of the first objects one encountered in the Temple was the laver, a large container of water which had to be continually refilled by hand. [1] So imagine what it might mean to an Old Testament believer that God would supply cleansing water by a self-sustaining fountain instead.

Zechariah 12:3-5 • Jerusalem the Milestone

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010
“‘It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. In that day,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, “A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the Lord of hosts, their God.”‘”
    —Zechariah 12:3-5 (NASB)

I freely admit that I do not now, nor have I ever possessed, a chart to serve as a road map of End Times events. I subscribe to the notion that the best teacher of how things are going to be fulfilled at Christ’s Second Coming is the way things were fulfilled at His First Coming. And for me it was not so much about specific dates and times as much as it was about milestones. God does not predict in advance what will happen during every second of every minute of every hour, but He does provide checkpoints along the way to testify that the overall plan is on a genuine path to fulfillment. And in the Last Days, one of the most significant milestones is Jerusalem.

Zechariah 10:2 • There Is No Shepherd

Monday, May 24th, 2010
“For the teraphim speak iniquity,
And the diviners see lying visions
And tell false dreams;
They comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wander like sheep,
They are afflicted, because there is no shepherd.”
    —Zechariah 10:2 (NASB)

The most repeated event associated with the Last Days which is also warned about more than any other is deception, both in the general population of the world’s unsaved but particularly among God’s people. In the modern sense of the word, “deception” is most often associated with someone deceiving or tricking an unwitting victim. In the biblical definition it is a very long process by which the willing voluntarily and consistently choose what they know to be wrong so that the inevitable end result is that they are given over to deception. Spiritually deceived people are simply given over to the very thing they have been pursuing all along.

Zechariah 8:7-8 • The Greater Work

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010
“‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Behold, I am going to save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west; and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.”‘”
    —Zechariah 8:7-8 (NASB)

It fascinates me how many things in general people know to be associated with the Bible such as the fact that God will cause the Jews to return to the land of Israel. Yes, it is a indisputable milestone testifying to the imminent return of Christ and a host of other events to follow. But I am equally fascinated by the fact that because so few seem to read the specific details of such things as provided in actual Scripture, a basic error has taken root. What we see in verses such as these, and which will be greatly expanded on in the rest of Zechariah going forward, is that it is not merely a physical return but a spiritual one.

Zechariah 4:9-10 • The Day of Small Things

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010
“‘The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will finish it. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. For who has despised the day of small things? But these seven will be glad when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel—these are the eyes of the Lord which range to and fro throughout the earth.’”
    —Zechariah 4:9-10 (NASB)

The messages through Haggai and Zechariah basically come between the 4th and 5th chapters of Ezra, which is the reason for the Walk with the Word reading schedule breaking up the book of Ezra in this manner. Under extremely unfavorable earthly circumstances they have returned to the land for the sole purpose of rebuilding the Temple and have only gotten only as far as laying the foundation before they give up. Yes, there was visible resistance against their efforts, but the truth is that it was not going the way they expected. Those “who had seen the first temple, wept” at the realization of how far it was falling short in comparison to the first one. [1] It was not a project that had been derailed by earthly forces, but really more the case that they took the opportunity to set it aside in the name of that opposition because it really was not going the way they had expected anyway.
