Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Mark 16:19-20 • The Signs Follow

Saturday, November 13th, 2010
"So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed."
    —Mark 16:19-20 (NASB)

This is why I'm baffled by those who claim they are bringing a new work of the Holy Spirit and introducing new signs and wonders — signs follow to confirm the Gospel message, not introduce something new. That is why the purveyors of such false works are consistently revealed to be distorting the very Word of God in order to justify their so-called signs, when the biblical model is 180 degrees from what they purport.

Mark 16:5-7 • The Authenticity of Disbelief

Friday, November 12th, 2010
"Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, 'Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, "He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you."'"
    —Mark 16:5-7 (NASB)

The way each Gospel records the actions and reactions of people to the news of Jesus' resurrection really speaks to the authenticity of the Gospels. No one devising a hoax would write about these things in this manner. There is a transparent, honest quality to everyone's knee-jerk reaction of disbelief, especially among those purported to be closest to Jesus. These are not the things you would write about if devising a fictionalized account.

Mark 15:21 • It Is All There

Thursday, November 11th, 2010
"They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross."
    —Mark 15:21 (NASB)

I believe that there are a lot of things which the various writers of the books of the Bible saw as being so obvious and common that they did not need further elaboration. Part of the issue for us is to retrieve this proper sense of context, to understand these things from their perspective so as to properly understand them ourselves today. Two examples of this very thing is found in this verse in the "obvious" fact of why a citizen of Cypress needed to be mentioned as participating somehow in the Messiah's crucifixion, and why Jesus would never have carried His cross to Golgotha.

Mark 15:15 • Not Just the Lamb, but the Goat

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010
"Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified."
    —Mark 15:15 (NASB)

We seem to grasp the concept of Jesus as the Lamb of God, the fulfillment of the requirements established in Passover, but I'm not sure we fully realize the other picture of Jesus as the Goat of God, the fulfillment of the Day of Atonement. Two goats would be brought to the high priest to lay upon them the sin of the people; one would be freed while the other sacrificed. The symbolism of the Day of Atonement is played out in what happened to Barabbas and Jesus.

Mark 14:38 • Watching & Praying

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010
"''Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'"
    —Mark 14:38 (NASB)

This is one of the things I really like about God's Word: it is practical. We are not admonished to simply avoid temptation, we are actually told HOW. Scripture just does not provide precise definitions of the terms it uses, but illustrates the greater concepts with the very actions needed to be taken to address them. The odds are that if we are experiencing a recurring problem with a particular temptation, we are neither praying about it nor keeping watch for it.

Mark 14:21, 35-36 • The Battle of Wills

Monday, November 8th, 2010
"'For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born'…And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. And He was saying, 'Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.'"
    —Mark 14:21, 35-36 (NASB)

I know it would take a lot more space than a daily entry in my Word Journal to definitively answer the question of predestination — did Judas have a choice? — but the examples of both Jesus and Judas seems to indicate that personal choice exists for everyone. Both Judas and Jesus made a choice where it came to God's will, choices which should serve as examples for us in the course of our own life.

Mark 14:12-16 • He’s in Control

Sunday, November 7th, 2010
"On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, 'Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?' And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, 'Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, "The Teacher says, 'Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?'" And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.' The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover."
    —Mark 14:12-16 (NASB)

Throughout the course of His earthly ministry, Jesus has repeatedly demonstrated that there is nothing spiritual or physical that is out of His control. Regardless of appearances to the contrary, Jesus always proved He was in greater control of those circumstances. And often, such as in this case, it has been discovered that He has been working out something even before it was actually asked of Him. It is obvious that Jesus made arrangements that would be ready even before His disciples asked how He wanted them addressed. There is a lesson here that has to do with trust, hope, and the true definition of faith in Christ.
