Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Jonah 1:4-6 • Non-Believers Know Best

Monday, August 31st, 2009
“The Lord hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up. Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep. So the captain approached him and said, ‘How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.’”
    —Jonah 1:4-6 (NASB)

There’s somewhat of an amusing irony here. Having refused to heed God’s Word, God sends His prophet from the Jews to the heathen Gentiles. So it must have been unsettling when Jonah realized it took a heathen Gentile captain of the ship to awaken God’s prophet to what God was doing. Just as Isreal had a problem recognizing and responding to God’s Word and ways, so did Jonah.

1 Kings 19:1-2 • Death to the Messenger

Sunday, August 30th, 2009
“Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.’”
    —1 Kings 19:1-2 (NASB)

Jezebel, one of the most prominent and repeated examples in the Bible representing the worst possible spiritual seduction has something which all seducers share in common: disdain for the truth. It didn’t matter that her false prophets failed and Elijah the one true prophet of God succeeded; it didn’t matter that her god failed to provide the sign which the One True God manifested; it didn’t matter that her religion was categorically proven false. Like all spiritual seducers instead of responding to God’s Word and repenting like the people did, she seeks to return everything to “normal” by killing the messenger.

2 Kings 14:24-25 • From One To The Next

Sunday, August 30th, 2009
“He [Amaziah, king of Israel] did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel sin. He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which He spoke through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gath-hepher.”
    —2 Kings 14:24-25 (NASB)

As the Walk with the Word reading schedule takes us to Jonah this week, it’s important to note a couple of things about the context of Jonah. In the New Tesatment when the Pharisees say, “No prophet arises out of Galilee“, [1] always remeber that Jonah is from Gath-hepher which is located in Galilee. When Jesus said He would give them no sign except the sign of Jonah [2] it wasn’t just a parallel to Jonah’s three days in the fist as a picture of the resurrection, but also that like Jonah He would come from a place disregarded and even disrespected by religious authorities. Very powerful prophets do, indeed, come from unexpected places like Galilee.

Joel 3:9 • A Test of Faith

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
“Proclaim this among the nations:
Prepare a war; rouse the mighty men!
Let all the soldiers draw near, let them come up!”
    —Joel 3:9 (NASB)

Reading a book of the prophets cannot be approached in the same manner we take with the books of the Law, history, or the likes of Psalms or Ecclesiastes. It is definitely important to understand when the propet was speaking in relationship to these other books, but we have to adjust to a different style of writing, a different way of expressing things. It’s important to keep in mind that prophets not only speak literally for their own times, but with dual and sometimes multiple future fulfillments in mind.

Joel 2:28-31 • Wonders Displayed in the Heavens

Friday, August 28th, 2009
“‘It will come about after this
That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind;
And your sons and daughters will prophesy,
Your old men will dream dreams,
Your young men will see visions.
Even on the male and female servants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Will be delivered;’”
    —Joel 2:30-32a (NASB)

Of course this sounds very familiar. It’s the key text quoted by Peter [1] his very first sermon explaining what was happening at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the church. It’s telling that Hebrew scholars — even modern ones — attribute this passage to events which will happen in concert with the arrival of the Messiah.

Joel 2:17 • Believers Interceding for Believers

Thursday, August 27th, 2009
“Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers,
Weep between the porch and the altar,
And let them say, ‘Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not make Your inheritance a reproach,
A byword among the nations.
Why should they among the peoples say,
“Where is their God?”‘”
    —Joel 2:17 (NASB)

To be sure, one of the burdens that should be on every Christian’s heart in the Last Days is for the unsaved, that they might yet turn to Christ. But I’m not sure that we fully realize that we’re called to have an additional burden: to intercede on behalf of all Christians, especially those who have made a verbal commitment to Christ but have yet to follow through by living a changed life for Christ.

Joel 2:10 • The Light Grows Dim

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
“Before them the earth quakes,
The heavens tremble,
The sun and the moon grow dark
And the stars lose their brightness.”
    —Joel 2:10 (NASB)

I am sure that signs in the sun and moon will literally take place in the Last Days, as Scripture repeatedly refers to them. [1] There will be something physically observable in these things. But I also can’t help but notice that light and darkness is often a biblical metaphor for a person’s spiritual condition.
