Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
-- Luke 8:15 (NASB)

Exodus 20:20 • That You May Not Sin

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012
"Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.'"
    —Exodus 20:20 (NASB)

The "Enhanced Strong's Lexicon" indicates that the word often translated as "fear" means "to fear, reverence, honour, respect" and "to inspire reverence or godly fear or awe". And what is the intended end result of all this reverence and godly fear for the One True God? "That you may not sin".

Exodus 20:2-3 • The Proper Context for Obedience

Monday, January 30th, 2012
"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me."
    —Exodus 20:2-3 (NASB)

We generally start reciting the Ten Commandments beginning with verse 3,"You shall have no other gods before Me." But it might prove to have a greater impact on our life and behavior if we began each commanment with the overall preface provided in verse 2, "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery". This is the context in which we should hold His commandments. They proceed from His sovereignty and grace.

Exodus 19:5-6 • When the Possession becomes Possessive

Sunday, January 29th, 2012
"'Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel."
    —Exodus 19:5-6 (NASB)

What is the change God intends for those coming to a personal knowledge and relationship with Him? You no longer belong to this world ("you shall be My own possession") and you no longer worship the things of this world ("you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests"). From the beginning, the goal of God's plan of salvation has been to change our identity and service.

Exodus 18:19-20 • Making Known the Way and the Work

Saturday, January 28th, 2012
"Now listen to me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You be the people's representative before God, and you bring the disputes to God, then teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do."
    —Exodus 18:19-20 (NASB)

There are some people who believe that just as you need to go to a professional for legal or medical advice, you need to go to a "religious" professional for spiritual advice. It's a belief rooted in the notion that only a scholar or "professionally trained" person has the ability to interpret and apply God's Word. Surprisingly, this notion is often found among modern-day Jews who leave Scripture up to the rabbi. I say "surprisingly", because this was not a belief adhered to by Moses.

Exodus 18:8-11 • “Seeing” is Not Necessarily “Believing”

Friday, January 27th, 2012
"Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had delivered them. Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, in delivering them from the hand of the Egyptians. So Jethro said, 'Blessed be the Lord who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people.'"
    —Exodus 18:8-11 (NASB)

Compare and contrast the difference between Pharaoh—the eyewitness of everything that took place—and Jethro, someone merely hearing about them. Although Pharaoh witnessed and lived through and was even the direct object of these events, he never listened and his hardened heart never allowed him to be changed or to accept God's message. Because Jethro's heart and ears are open and leaning towards God to begin with, he is transformed and confesses, "Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods".

Exodus 17:11-13 • Partners in the Battle

Thursday, January 26th, 2012
"So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword."
    —Exodus 17:11-13 (NASB)

What a tremendous picture of what it takes for the church to overcome and win spiritual battles! In the example of Moses, Aaron, Hur, Joshua and the fighters we are provided with an illustration of what it takes to overcome our spiritual enemy. Some are needed to engage in the battle, some to lead that battle, and others to support them through prayer and intercession on their behalf.

Exodus 16:17-18 • No Excess, No Lack

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012
"The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered as much as he should eat."
    —Exodus 16:17-18 (NASB)

The picture here is everyone going out each day to gather the manna, bringing it back to a central place, and then doling it out to each person as they need it, an omer at a time. Everyone worked to varying degrees—some gathered more, some less—but everyone received what they needed. It's a teaching that the same grace is in all, that everyone alike has an equal interest in Christ. Although some have sinned more or less than others, although our needs vary widely from one person to the next, we are all equally redeemed by His blood, justified by His righteousness, forgiven to all take part in the inheritance of His eternal kingdom.
