John 18:37 • To Testify to the Truth

"Therefore Pilate said to Him, 'So You are a king?' Jesus answered, 'You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.'"
       —John 18:37 (NASB)

There are only 2 kind of people in this world: Those of the truth, and those of the lie. "The Lie" is the age-old deception of Satan first presented to Eve that "you will be like God". (Genesis 3:5) As Paul puts it,

"For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen."
       —Romans 1:24 (NASB)

It's the substitution of God with something else. But those "of the truth" hear, understand, and cling to Christ's explanation,

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'"
       —John 14:6 (NASB)

It's the truth that has no substitute. Any other notion is a lie, regardless of the personal choice to believe it or not. With Christ, it's an either/or situation, not a relative ranking among possibilities.

In my daily walk, my daily struggles, I need to begin with an ear bent towards the truth, not what I want to hear.
