Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

“For they have conspired together with one mind;
Against You they make a covenant:”
    —Psalm 83:5 (NASB)

From time to time it is necessary to pause and consider at whom the world is really taking aim. The warfare taking place in the heavenly places is actually reflected in what takes place on earth. But as soldiers in the trenches on the front line we can become so absorbed in the battle taking place around us that we forget the goal of the war is far greater than just overcoming the little foxhole we happen to occupy. And we might lose sight of the fact that just as we are committed and focused philosophically to our side, so are they over there opposite us.

It is no coincidence that the world has double standards for religion where Christianity is concerned. The reading of the Bible is “offensive” so it has to be ceased, but at the same time the public reading of any other religious text must be upheld and venerated. Any mention of Christianity in the classroom must be eradicated under the pretext of the separation of church and state, but education in all other religions must be lawfully pursued. The list of such incongruities is long and well-known, but it is important to consider that this is not just merely happenstance, coincidence, or even the result of ignorance.

Notice it says, “Against You they make a covenant“. Just as we have a covenant with God, so there are those who have entered into a covenant against God. The rules and obligations of our agreement are designed to bring us closer to Him; theirs are to purposely maintain their distance from Him. And just as there can be Christian unity, so too can the opposition organize “with one mind“. It explains why so often people of different religious backgrounds and cultural differences can be completely at odds with each other on every other issue in life until it comes to those darned Christians.

It is interesting to note that the Bible’s scant use of the word “tolerate” is mostly used to chastise Christians for putting up with sin and evil instead of standing up against it. This is not a rallying cry for Christians to employ the political process every time their “rights” are under attack, but to recognize the need as it was expressed by Jude, “Contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints“. [1] The other side is equally contending earnestly to the contrary.†††
