Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Psalm 91:1-4 • Biblical Protection

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!’
For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.”
    —Psalm 93:1-4 (NASB)

I suppose it’s due at least in part to being an aggressive male raised in the American way of doing things, but my initial urge is to be a go-getter. I usually think first about taking on the challenge, meeting the problem head on, not being afraid to take the bull by the horns. My first thoughts are usually about how best to go out and engage whatever issue is looming on the horizon. But have you ever noticed how often the Bible speaks in terms of standing fast?

Look at all the terms employed in these verses: “shelter“, “shadow“, “refuge“, “fortress“, “shield” and “bulwark“. They are all fixed placements, something one runs to for protection, not takes with them into battle. Even the references to being covered by “pinions” and “under His wings” are places of protection. My earthly instinct is to go out and do battle on the Lord’s behalf; the biblical model is to move under His protection and allow Him to work on my behalf.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
    —Ephesians 6:11 (NASB)

Even the teaching of God’s armor is a lesson about standing fast in the Lord’s protection. We might want to consider that in the course of each day we need to find our way back to His refuge, His stronghold, His protection instead of seeking ways to effect the same on our own.†††
