Job 38:31-33 • Knowing What You Need to Know

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades,
Or loose the cords of Orion?
Can you lead forth a constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her satellites?
Do you know the ordinances of the heavens,
Or fix their rule over the earth?”
    —Job 38:31-33 (NASB)

Every generation thinks it has the corrected, right information that the previous generation misapplied, only to find itself corrected by the next generation. Yes, at one time the absolute scientific proof was that the universe revolved around the earth. The world was flat. Milk was safe straight from the cow. Successive generations armed with “new and improved” absolute scientific proof upended these notions and replaced them with facts that were in turn upended and replaced further down the road. If you think that today’s “absolute scientific proof” is the be-all, end-all of the truth, just wait a couple of minutes; it will be amended shortly.

One of the most annoying human character traits is to assume that the information one has is all the data in existence on any given topic and to derive its meaning from same. Once upon a time the earth was flat. Once upon a time the best cure for sickness was to drain your blood. Once upon a time tobacco was thought to be the best thing for athletes that wanted increased lung capacity and breathing. Nothing in the universe is as myopic as mankind when it comes to drawing the wrong conclusions from the limited information available.

The one who acknowledges not being able to comprehend the whole and/or not having all the answers is the one that begins to realize the nature and need for faith. That is, that God has revealed enough of Himself through the universe that mankind can know for certain that there is One far beyond theirselves at work.

“By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.”
    —Hebrews 11:3 (NASB)

When we come to grip with the fact that the Creator set “the ordinances of the heavens” and fixed “their rule over the earth”, we have to more than seriously consider that the same structure and guidelines were established by Him for the way would should live our life.
