All day and all night they will never keep silent.
You who remind the Lord, take no rest for yourselves;
And give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”
—Isaiah 62:6-7 (NASB)
We are admonished not to pray by incessantly repeating phrases and patterns, chanting the same thing over and over and over again. But we’re most certainly encouraged to continually bring things before the Lord, particularly where the work of His kingdom is concerned. It may seem like a long time coming from our perspective, but it will come. In fact, when it comes to His work, we’re to never cease bringing it to Him in prayer. Perhaps it’s one of the indications when we finally become more concerned for His name and glory than our own, when the salient points of our prayers number greater for His kingdom than our own personal desires.
Compare this to how the chapter opened to provide an example of Christ’s character:
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her salvation like a torch that is burning.”
—Isaiah 62:1 (NASB)
As with most things, a good watchman emulates Christ our Master. He doesn’t “keep silent” nor “keep quiet” when it comes to the work of the kingdom; neither should we. The dual role of a watchman in ancient times was not limited to just sounding a warning when an enemy or danger drew near, but to gleefully announce the good tidings of a welcome visitor or event. To those resistant to God’s Word the watchman warns of judgment, to those adherant to His Word the watchman announces His arrival. In either case, we are to “take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth”.
Spiritual watchmen are “on duty” until the End Times are fulfilled. This is why we don’t simply have a passsing interest or curiosity about the Last Days, but are constantly working toward that day when our salvation will be fully realized. We should be earnestly seeking God’s fulfillment of His Word more than anything else that we might realize not just for ourselves, but everyone around us, the completion of His work in and through us. It’s not something intended to be kept to ourselves.†††
