—2 Kings 25:27-30 (NASB)
Everything about the fall of Judah and their captivity into Babylon came true. Consider how hard it must have been to come face-to-face with the reality of God’s Word in their living out the destruction of their homeland along with their new status as slaves, relocated far away from the land of their birth. However, accompanying God’s Word of judgment was also His Word of restoration. You might think that the proof of their captivity would be enough to prove that God would come through with His promise of restoration, but He gave them an additional sign — He gave them Jehoiachin.
Jehoiachin’s situation seemed hopeless. He was cast into prison for years upon years when, all of the sudden, he was elevated to a place of exultation in a single day. In one miraculous motion he went from being a prisoner to the king’s honored guest, from mistreatment to kind treatment, from prison clothes to royal clothes, from prison food to eating at the king’s table. He was a visible reminder to all the Jews of what God was going to do for them as well.
But doesn’t this all sound a little familiar for us as well? Isn’t this what happened through the work of the cross? And isn’t this also what is intended for our ultimate future in Heaven? From prison to the presence of the King, from mistreatment to kind treatment, exchanging our rags of unrighteousness for clean clothes of righteousness, seated at the King’s banquet table.
Just as they should have taken God at His Word regardless of the present conditions, so should we.†††
