Hearing God Speak through His Word

"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word
in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Deuteronomy 26:17-19 • We Said, He Said

April 7th, 2012 by Servant

"You have today declared the Lord to be your God, and that you would walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordinances, and listen to His voice. The Lord has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments; and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, for praise, fame, and honor; and that you shall be a consecrated people to the Lord your God, as He has spoken."
    —Deuteronomy 26:17-19 (NASB)

The evidence of our faith and belief in God is in the degree to which we change our behavior to "walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordinances, and listen to His voice". According to His Word and His Word alone we walk, keep, and listen. And what does He confirm from His end? That we "should keep all His commandments". It's not just something we voluntarily undertake as a new creation in Christ, it's a continuing requirement to which He requires our vigilant adherence. It's not just something we offer, it's required. "His ways", "His statutes", "His commandments", "His ordinances", and "His voice". How is it that we come to tolerate OTHER ways, rules, and guidance?

Deuteronomy 22:9-11 • Fixing the Mix

April 6th, 2012 by Servant

"You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, or all the produce of the seed which you have sown and the increase of the vineyard will become defiled. You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. You shall not wear a material mixed of wool and linen together."
    —Deuteronomy 22:9-11 (NASB)

We have either experienced personally or know first-hand of someone who has begun the journey on the road to a personal relationship with Christ only to end up somewhere else, far off-course from that originally intended. Sometimes it's obvious that a conscience choice was made at some point to simply leave the path—what the Bible often refers to as "turning to the right or the left"—other times it's not so obvious, seeming to have occurred by going off-course by tiny increments so as not to abruptly notice that the path has eventually been left. This is an especially delicate discussion in trying to determine why a person, ministry, or even entire spiritual movement appears to have begun legitimately and derived its source from God, but later mutates into something else, something eventually and obviously no longer of God. What went wrong? How can we avoid making such mistakes ourselves?

Deuteronomy 18:20-22 • When the Message is Presumptuous

April 5th, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 05: Deuteronomy | No Comments »

"But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?' When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him."
    —Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (NASB)

There are two basic flavors of false prophets—those who claim spiritual insight, knowledge, and power through some entity other than the One True God, and those who falsely claim such as coming in His name. One attempts to exalt a false god to overtake the place of God, the other to exalt themselves in His place. In either case, the defining biblical characteristic is that they speak "presumptuously".

Deuteronomy 17:18-20 • Write, Read, Observe

"Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes, that his heart may not be lifted up above his countrymen and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may continue long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel."
    —Deuteronomy 17:18-20 (NASB)

Sometimes I like to work Scripture backwards to capture the teaching:

Deuteronomy 14:28-29 • Bring Out All the Tithe

April 3rd, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 05: Deuteronomy | No Comments »

"At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year, and shall deposit it in your town. The Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do."
    —Deuteronomy 14:28-29 (NASB)

As someone that has held administrative positions within churches that's required me to provide monthly and annual reports tracking how monies were collected and spent, these verses have really grabbed my attention. I've never heard of any religion that did not require its members to tithe of their earnings or resources in some way to support it. And so I'm recalling the typical financial reports that I would generate to show what was received and how it was spent. Typically "tithes and offerings" went into the General Fund and covered the core operations of the ministry. Separate accounts and fund raising efforts were maintained for the Missions Fund to support missionary activities and even a "Bear-A-Burden" fund to assist church members on an emergency basis. But here we have what is the equivalent to the whole yearly tithe of produce being directed NOT to the operation of the main ministry/church, but to meet the needs of the "…Levite…the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town".

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 • Does the Message Confirm It?

April 2nd, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 05: Deuteronomy | No Comments »

"If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul."
    —Deuteronomy 13:1-3 (NASB)

False prophets can prophesy something which actually comes true. They can even perform an actual sign or wonder. Their actions can perfectly imitate those of true, godly prophets. But the true test of ALL signs and wonders as to whether or not they are truly come from God is the accompanying message. The explanations and messages accompanying the signs and wonders of the true prophets of God magnify the One True God; those of the false prophet entice observers to follow another, very often the false prophet himself.

Deuteronomy 12:29-30 • Do Not Inquire

April 1st, 2012 by Servant
Posted in 05: Deuteronomy | No Comments »

"When the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'"
    —Deuteronomy 12:29-30 (NASB)

Every generation of Believer has to come to grip with the issue of whether or not a belief, practice, or activity of another religion is applicable to Christianity. There are many things that "feel" familiar or that look the same. There are other things that look to be so successful and beneficial to the practitioners that one wonders if they wouldn't be useful tools in the pursuit of one's own spiritual goals. "Beware that you are not ensnared and follow them."
